Daniel W Fletcher to leave his Fiorucci menswear role

Daniel W Fletcher is leaving Fiorucci after three-and-a-half years as its menswear artistic director. He joined the relaunched brand in 2019 with a remit to re-set and drive it forward as it targeted major growth.

Fletcher, who showed a bespoke-meets-RTW collection in a link-up with Huntsman at London Fashion Week a few days ago, said that he’ll be completing his final collection and leaving at the end of this month.

He added that he’s “immensely proud of what we have accomplished together during my time here, and have had so much fun along the way”.

That has included adding new categories such as embracing the wider ready-to-wear sector beyond the label’s core denim offer.

Meanwhile Fiorucci, which hasn’t named a replacement, reportedly said the split was “mutual and amicable”.

Fletcher only graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2015 so his appointment in December 2019 was a big achievement, especially considering the women’s offer has been created by a brand design team rather than a named designer.

At the time, Fiorucci CEO Simon Backhouse said that “our ability to attract an individual of Daniel’s calibre is a real testament to the strength of the brand and our ambitions for growth”.

Fiorucci was founded in the 1960s and was riding high in the late 60s and 70s. But an administration filing in the 90s saw it then passing through several hands.

Japanese denim producer Edwin bought it and was then itself acquired by Itochu in 2014. Fiorucci was sold in late 2015 to British businesswoman Janie Schaffer (who founded the Knickerbox chain) and her business partner and ex-husband Stephen.

They relaunched it in 2017 and have worked on the brand revival by blending the label’s heritage with a modern approach.

That was clear a couple of months ago, when Fletcher unveiled the SS23 collection at an event in LA. He said he starts each season by looking through the Fiorucci archives.
